The Sentinel Event

1 Thessalonians 4:16 “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.”

Within healthcare there is an expectation for providing safety to the patient, regardless of the procedure. If a serious unexpected event occurs that causes injury either physically, psychologically, or even death, then a sentinel event has occurred. After the event, a process is put in place that seeks to understand the nature of the event and why it occurred.

There is a sentinel event that is going to happen across the world and will be unrelated to medicine, it will be a catastrophic sequence of events that will occur after the Lord surgically removes His church and those left behind will suffer physical and psychological turmoil while many others will die.

The rapture will be an event in which God removes His people before a tribulation occurs like the world has ever known. It is a prophesied event that fits an order of events moving in a precise order. The event is imminent, in other words, there is nothing else that needs to occur for it to happen.

Biblical prophecy has a track record of being 100% accurate. Everything that has been prophesied by God’s prophets has occurred, everything that is yet to come can be trusted to occur as well.

Encouragement

The reason I enjoy talking about the rapture is that it reminds me of how all I see in this world will be made new one day. The return of the King is the promise every Spirit filled believer hopes for with great anticipation.

1 Thessalonians 4:18 “Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.  Therefore comfort one another with these words.”

The important point to remember is no matter how crazy this world gets, no matter how much sorrow it brings, or uncertain the future, the Lord has a plan and His plan will come to pass.

Hold on…don’t give up. Keep your eyes looking heavenward and stay strong in the Lord and His joy will lead you until the end.

A Christian Perspective

Imagine what the world will think when millions of God’s people are taken up into Heaven all at once. Consider the course of events that will happen soon thereafter.

1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 “For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”

The wrath that will befall the world will not be experienced by God’s people. It is important to remember that the tribulation is an act of wrath by God upon godlessness. What we experience today is the wrath of man and Satan. Evil in this world brings all manner of trouble, trouble that reflects the evil from which it occurred. God’s wrath is not evil but is meant for good. The trials that will come upon this world does not compare to a future in the Lake of Fire, an endpoint for all who reject the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

God’s wrath is not reserved for God’s people. Jesus took our wrath to the cross. His sacrifice was enough to fulfill the wrath that we deserve.

1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 “For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.”

Tribulation is meant to reduce the pride of this world with the hope that they will look up and finally believe. God’s people need not go through God’s tribulation, they already follow Him. The early church thought the return of Christ was imminent, the idea the church will be saved from this wrath is firmly revealed in scripture.

A Worldly Perspective

The moment millions of people disappear from the earth, the earth will look considerably different.

The infrastructure of earth will be brought into disarray. A common description being used today is the term “essential worker”. The idea that the people who fill certain roles in society are necessary for society to function has been designated to key elements of industry. Transportation, food service, health care, law and order, infrastructure and just about every other role that keeps cities and countries moving forward in function are deemed as necessary elements of civilization.

Within nearly every element of society are christians who will be suddenly gone in the twinkling of an eye.

1 Corinthians 15:51-52 “Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”

The ones taken will only be the ones who exemplify the church of Philadelphia.

What is it that marks this church?

  • Perseverance–There are those who try out Jesus, only to find they weren’t willing to count the cost. Then there are those who hold on to the very end, because they know there is no other way. Revelation 3:10 “Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. “

Perseverance is only possible by relying upon the strength of God’s Spirit. You cannot sustain a walk with Christ on your own.

God’s purpose is for us to be with Him. Salvation is to be brought from death to life. Living in sin is to live in a state of spiritual death. Judgement is upon the heads of all who have sinned and once the breath of life is gone from the body, the spirit of mankind must give account for their rebellion.

Those who have gone before us have known the grace of God and likewise His example of preserving the godly from His judgement.

2 Peter 2:4-9 “For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them deep into hell, placing them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;  if He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood on its ungodly people, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, among the eight; if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction, reducing them to ashes as an example of what is coming on the ungodly; and if He rescued Lot, a righteous man distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless  (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)—  if all this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.

If you are a true believer, you have nothing to fear. We don’t need to fear the antichrist, the mark of the beast, or one single wrath that will be poured out upon the earth.

The true believer has only God’s goodness to come.

We have a great hope now and and great future to come. Be encouraged by the news, let the hope of God’s promises carry you through the chaos. Live for Jesus, and know the joy of persevering in His love.

One day…you’ll see the fullness of that love and you’ll be overwhelmed.
