Deuteronomy 5:27 “Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says. Then you can tell us everything the LORD our God tells you; we will listen and obey.”
In the final days when the Lord is exalted, the enemy has been completely defeated and the final judgements occur, we have a glimpse into the standard by which our judge will sit.
The 7 seals that Jesus alone can open will mark the beginnings of great sorrow upon the earth. The 7 trumpets of God mark the escalation of trials and finally the 7 bowls of wrath bring to completion the wrath of God upon a world that has forsaken Him.
What is the means by which the Lord brings judgement?
The final part of this prophecy of Isaiah reveals the means: “He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth and slay the wicked with the breath of His lips.“
When we take a look back in history and see the result of God speaking, the effect is awesome.
Genesis 1:3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
At the very start of the Creation story, the voice of God initiated all that we now know. Light was formed at His command, then the firmament, dry land, plant life, the celestial bodies, sun and moon, sea life, animals, and then He made us…mankind.
Have you ever wondered why God chose to make us last?
I suppose we see a pattern of God preparing us a home before He sets us in place to occupy it. Just like now, as I write, Jesus is preparing a home for His people, a home He has been preparing for 2000 years. I love Keith Green’s take in his song “I can’t wait to get to Heaven”, the lyrics speak of a home that we all long for one day. The first verse goes like this:
“Seaside sunset, silver linings round the clouds,Birds fly, singing, making such a joyful sound.Thoughts of heaven somehow seem to fill my mind,But I can’t even imagine, what it is I’m gonna find.I can’t wait to get to heaven, when you’ll wipe away all my fears. In six days you created everything,But you’ve been working on heaven two thousand years.”
The hope of Heaven is founded in the fact that God will dwell in the midst of His people. His love that He gives to us is reciprocated by our love for Him. The judgment upon the world is against those who have rejected this love.
Psalm 62:11 “God has spoken once; I have heard this twice: that power belongs to God,”
Mankind has tried for generations to mimic the power of God. Transcendental meditation, sorcery, witchcraft, the list goes on and on with the evil that has attempted to elevate themselves into a position that is godlike. Just in case they were wondering, The Lord God has reminded everyone that power belongs solely to Him. If anyone exhibits power in their life, they are exhibiting God’s power through them.
Genesis 46:2 “Then God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
Sometimes God speaks quietly, in Jacob’s instance He spoke through a vision, in a dream and yet He made Himself very clear as to what HIs expectation was for this man whom God brought the 12 tribes of Israel out of.
Whether it was the quiet voice speaking to a young Samuel in the Temple, or the still small voice speaking to Elijah in the cave, God reveals His will in the right fashion for those who listen.
Ezekiel 43:2 “And behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with His glory.”
The revelation of God to Ezekiel has been sifted through by scores of theologians for thousands of years. The prediction of future events is one thing but a revelation of God is where the depth really lies.
I’m not going to try and unpack all that is revealed in Ezekiel, there is just far too much to tackle right now, what I do want to look at is how God spoke.
Have you ever taken a trip to Niagara Falls in New York or Victoria falls in Zambia? The beauty and power exhibited by so much water rushing at one time is deafening. If you want another glimpse into a heavenly perspective, look closer at these descriptives, you’ll begin to a get a picture of what it is like in God’s presence.
Do you know what else sounds like this in Heaven? Cherubim.
Ezekiel 1:23-24 “And under the firmament their wings spread out straight, one toward another. Each one had two which covered one side, and each one had two which covered the other side of the body. When they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of many waters, like the voice of the Almighty, a tumult like the noise of an army; and when they stood still, they let down their wings.”
There are signs and sounds all around us now that echo what is to come, one day, we will fully understand why God placed all of these around us but I have a feeling it was in part to show us a glimpse of His glory.
God’s commanding presence is only amplified by HIs voice. With the Word spoken we have life and nothing can come against what he declares.
Ezekiel 12:25 “For I am the LORD. I speak, and the word which I speak will come to pass; it will no more be postponed; for in your days, O rebellious house, I will say the word and perform it,” says the Lord GOD.’ ”
When the Lord makes a declaration—It will happen. It is not a matter of if but when it will occur. Far too often we take the Word of God with a grain of salt, as if it was only a strong suggestion. We fail far too often to realize that God’s Word has power and when we trust in Him, that power has authority.
When God speaks to mankind, watch how He presents Himself….
If you are an enemy to His throne or you are a servant in His Kingdom, He reveals a different aspect of who He is.
Genesis 15:1 “After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”
Genesis 28:13 “And behold, the LORD stood above it and said: “I am the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants.”
Exodus 3:4-6 “So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.
In this brief survey we witness God approaching in peace, with a promise, and a revelation.
When the people of Israel were in the desert at Mt. Sinai, their idolatry and rebellion was before them. When God met Moses at the top, the people witnessed the awesome display of God’s power.
Exodus 20:18-19 “Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.”
The people recognized not only God’s power but His judgement was likewise before Him.
2 Chronicles 34:27 “because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God when you heard His words against this place and against its inhabitants, and you humbled yourself before Me, and you tore your clothes and wept before Me, I also have heard you,” says the LORD.
Not only does the Lord speak to us authoritatively, He likewise inquires of us. By giving us a forum to speak, He shows us love and lifts us up into His presence where we do not deserve.
Why does God care what we have to say?
Speaking out of what is in your heart is an act of faith. What you speak carries weight and we must remember to guard what we say carefully, words are not idle.
There is so much more than can be said about this subject but I’ll leave it here for now.
Remember, God is still speaking, the question is do we hear Him?
